How the ProVision 'naked airport scanner' works
By Michael Conroy
14 May 2010
Currently on trial at Heathrow airport, L-3’s ProVision
scanner can see through layers of clothing to detect
hidden items just a few millimetres wide. Yes, it’s
controversial. But here’s what we can reveal.
How it works
A millimetre-wave scanner uses antenna arrays to transmit
and receive high-frequency radio waves as they circle a
subject -- dense materials such as metal will reflect
more energy. The raw data is turned into a hologram that
is examined for suspicious objects by algorithms. The
holograms are then rendered into 3D figures for
inspection. The process takes about seven seconds.
Imaging Sampling Unit (ISU)
The unit processes data from the antenna arrays and
reconstructs it in 3D. With the reflected energy data --
seen as a greyscale value, with brighter areas denoting
materials of higher reflectivity -- the samples are
digitised and passed on to the System Control Unit.
Antenna arrays
Dual antenna-masts rotate around the body, transmitting
and receiving radio waves at frequencies between 24 and
30GHz. In this range, waves pass right through clothing
but bounce off denser materials such as skin -- or
concealed objects. Unlike X-ray scanners’ waves, those
emitted by millimetre wave scanners cannot cause tissue
damage.
System Control Unit (SCU)
This quad-core computer assembles data from the ISU into
a hologram. The image is rendered as a 3D figure after
the automated threat detection algorithms have been
applied. Earlier this year, a worker at Heathrow was
warned after ogling a colleague’s hologram on a similar
type of machine also being trialled there.
Automated threat detection
Image-processing routines identify suspicious objects by
analysing more than 200 distinct features such as
texture, an object’s outline and unexpectedly bright or
dark areas.
operator control panel
This LCD panel displays a stylised 3D model of the
subject -- any areas of potential interest are
highlighted in yellow.

Seeing through walls
Researchers at MIT’s Lincoln Lab have developed new radar
technology that provides real-time video of what’s going
on behind solid walls.
The researchers’ device is an unassuming array of antenna
arranged into two rows — eight receiving elements on top,
13 transmitting ones below — and some computing
equipment, all mounted onto a movable cart. But it has
powerful implications for military operations, especially
“urban combat situations,” says Gregory Charvat,
technical staff at Lincoln Lab and the leader of the
project....... The Lincoln Lab team’s system may be used
at a range of up to 60 feet away from the wall. (Demos
were done at 20 feet, which Charvat says is realistic for
an urban combat situation.) And, it gives a real-time
picture of movement behind the wall in the form of a
video at the rate of 10.8 frames per second...... The
system digitizes the signals it receives into video.
Currently, humans show up as “blobs” that move about the
screen in a bird’s-eye-view perspective, as if the viewer
were standing on the wall and looking down at the scene
behind. The researchers are currently working on
algorithms that will automatically convert a blob into a
clean symbol to make the system more end-user friendly.
“To understand the blobs requires a lot of extra
training,” Charvat says.

Researcher controls colleague’s motions in 1st human
brain-to-brain interface
University of Washington researchers have performed what
they believe is the first noninvasive human-to-human
brain interface, with one researcher able to send a brain
signal via the Internet to control the hand motions of a
fellow researcher........ On Aug. 12, Rao sat in his lab
wearing a cap with electrodes hooked up to an
electroencephalography machine, which reads electrical
activity in the brain. Stocco was in his lab across
campus wearing a purple swim cap marked with the
stimulation site for the transcranial magnetic
stimulation coil that was placed directly over his left
motor cortex, which controls hand movement.
The team had a Skype connection set up so the two labs
could coordinate, though neither Rao nor Stocco could see
the Skype screens.
Rao looked at a computer screen and played a simple video
game with his mind. When he was supposed to fire a cannon
at a target, he imagined moving his right hand (being
careful not to actually move his hand), causing a cursor
to hit the “fire” button. Almost instantaneously, Stocco,
who wore noise-canceling earbuds and wasn’t looking at a
computer screen, involuntarily moved his right index
finger to push the space bar on the keyboard in front of
him, as if firing the cannon. Stocco compared the feeling
of his hand moving involuntarily to that of a nervous tic.
“It was both exciting and eerie to watch an imagined
action from my brain get translated into actual action by
another brain,” Rao said. “This was basically a one-way
flow of information from my brain to his.

I started this piece with stories from mainstream press
about directed energy technologies because targeted
individuals have complained about these energies being
used on them, as weapons for decades, earning pity, eye
rolls or mocking. But now you only need to read
mainstream press to see that directed energy exists, and
has been worked on for years, even decades in some cases.
And you only have to read of the animal experimentation
of these technologies to guess what people without
conscience could do with them.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Directed-energy_weapon
Studies have found[citation needed] that exposure to high
intensity ultrasound at frequencies from 700 kHz to 3.6
MHz can cause lung and intestinal damage in mice. Heart
rate patterns following vibroacoustic stimulation have
resulted in serious arterial flutter and bradycardia.
Tests performed on mice show the threshold for both lung
and liver damage occurs at about 184 dB. Damage increases
rapidly as intensity is increased.

It can also just be fun. "I have walked around with it
and pointed it at people’s heads," Haberkern says, "and
they turn around wondering why they have voices in their
head."
------------------------------------------------
So targets were either psychic as they talked about
technologies that would be openly used in the future, or
they were telling the truth. Once upon a time, typing
"Directed Energy Weapons" into a search engine would
bring up mostly the websites of those tinfoil hat
loonies. Yesterday when I did it, all but 3 results on
the first page were mainstream; press, technology
developers, defence departments.
And the technologies are sold as beneficial: they can
help people walk again, help those struck silent
communicate again, heal the sick, make people superhuman.
What about the damage that can be done with them if the
possessors of the technology wanted to?

chose to lead off this post were chosen because targets
have complained about being looked at through their
clothes, in their home, having voices forced into their
heads, and their bodies and minds being controlled for
decades.
Another common complaint is artificially induced sexual
arousal and induced orgasm. In roughly 2009 I read a
story in the U.K Daily Mail newspaper about a directed
energy technology that doctors could point at the
genitals of patients to cause arousal. It would help
women who had no desire for sex after childbirth, for
example. I went looking for the story to add to this post
but could not find it or anything like it from any
mainstream publication. But if targets are truth tellers/
psychic, look out for this technology. It will be showing
up.
Can you imagine what evil people could do if they paired
such a technology with putting ideas into people's minds
as to what they are aroused by (rape, animals, children)?
Followed after long enough, by irresistible urges to do something?
